Codeine, the cult ’90s band and one of the pioneers of slowcore, takes the stage at Blind on May 11 for their first-ever Istanbul concert! Considered one of the most influential bands in alternative rock history, Codeine will meet music lovers at Blind Istanbul on May 11. With their distinctive sound developed in the early ’90s, the band helped pioneer what would later become known as slowcore. Now, they are preparing to bring their timeless songs to audiences in Türkiye for the first time. Formed by Stephen Immerwahr, John Engle, and Chris Brokaw, Codeine established a unique place in the alternative music scene with their 1990 debut album, Frigid Stars LP. Defined by slow tempos, minimalist guitars, heavy, deliberate drumming, and Immerwahr’s fragile vocals, their music explored themes of depression, alienation, and emotional distance with a restrained yet deeply affecting approach. The tension they created between silence and noise, stillness and intensity, went on to influence countless musicians and bands. Codeine’s musical legacy remains an important reference point not only for their own era but also for the independent music scene that developed in the following decades. Their influence can be heard in the music of bands such as Low and Duster, while their distinctive approach has led new generations of listeners to rediscover their work over the years. Recorded in New York in 1992 but left unreleased for decades, the band's album Dessau was eventually brought to light by archival record label Numero Group. Featuring alternative versions of songs that would later be re-recorded for the Barely Real EP and The White Birch album, Dessau offers a different perspective on one of Codeine’s most creative periods. After performing sold-out shows in London and Paris in 2023, followed by concerts in South America and Japan, the band once again demonstrated how their live performances continue to resonate across generations. Frontman Stephen Immerwahr has also emphasized that the meaning their music still holds for new listeners played an important role in their decision to return to the stage. With their slow-burning melodies, striking simplicity, and deeply emotional atmosphere, Codeine’s first Istanbul performance promises to be a special night for both longtime fans and those experiencing their music live for the first time. Codeine takes the stage at Blind on May 11 for their first-ever performance in Istanbul.
