His music touched on virtually the entire history of jazz, from bebop to free jazz, and he was also a pioneer in electronic music, space music, and free improvisation. As one of the key figures in 1960s avant-garde jazz, Sun Ra wrote a pioneering chapter in the canon of Afrofuturism as a composer, instrumentalist, poet, and philosopher. The spirit of Sun Ra is alive and well in the present-day manifestation of the Sun Ra Arkestra, led by alto saxophone legend Marshall Allen, who celebrated his 100th birthday this year, and saxophone maestro Knoel Scott.
